HOW TO GET YOUR LICENSE

1st STEP
Take Drivers Education in-class or on-line.
Currently we no longer hold in-class drivers education. Our on-line class is offered here.
2nd Go online to the Department of Motor Vehicles to begin your application process.
Can I take my knowledge test (permit test) online before visiting a DMV office?
DMV offers an online knowledge test. This test is offered in 35 languages and is available Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The test needs a webcam and
cannot be done on a smartphone or tablet. You will verify your identity before starting and will be monitored during the test.
If eligible, you can choose this option after filling out your driver’s license application. If you are under 18, your parent or guardian will need to give permission
before you can take the test.
The test can be attempted online twice. If you fail both attempts, you will need to go to a DMV office to take the test a third time.
•
To apply for a provisional permit you must be at least 15 1/2 but, under 18 years of age.
•
Have a drivers education completion certificate if you are under 17 ½ years of age.
•
Provide an acceptable birth date/legal presence document (original copies only will be accepted). Click here for more details.
•
Provide your true full name.
•
Present your acceptable residency documents if you have never had a California driver license or California identification card.
•
Provide your social security number. It will be verified with the Social Security Administration while you are in the office. (your name must match your birth certificate exactly).
•
Pay a nonrefundable application fee.(This fee entitles you to three exams of any type within the 12-month period and pays for both the instruction permit and the driver license. If all
requirements are not met within the 12-month period, the application becomes void and all steps must be completed again.)
•
Pass a vision exam.
•
Submit a completed and signed DMV Driver license application (eDL 44) form. The link will take you online where you can start the process.
•
Have your parents' or guardians' signatures on the application form eDL 44.
•
Take your written test at the DMV (Online is now available for you to take the permit test) A passing score is 80%. NOTE: Please READ YOUR CALIFORNIA HAND BOOK! According to
DMV statistics for the state of California the overall fail rate for applicants on their first-attempt for the written test is 51 percent.
Examiners in Clovis CA DMV, state that 82 percent of teenagers fail their first-attempt on the written test in the Clovis office. They say the reason is that not enough teens are reading the

The written test is taken on a TouchScreen at DMV or online at home. More info click here.
Note: To allow you sufficient time for testing, DMV will not be administering knowledge tests after 4:00 pm.
If you are over 17 ½ but under 18 years of age, you may get your permit without the driver education and driver training certificates however, you will not be able to take the driving test
until you turn 18.

NOTE: READ YOUR PERMIT!
Your permit will NOT be valid until you have your FIRST driver training session with a Driving Instructor and he or she sign off on your permit. Failure to do this may result in the loss of your permit
till age 18 that includes driving in parking lots open to the public. But if you reach the age of 17 1/2 it will then be OK to drive with anyone 25 years of age or older. When you are 17 1/2 you do not
need to take driver education to get a permit nor do you have to take driver training. To take the drive test in-car at the DMV you must have your permit for minimum six (6) months and one day or
wait until your 18th birthday.
Drivers Training consist of six (6) hours taken over 3 days 2 hour sessions each day for a total of 6 hours of behind the wheel training.
Once you complete your drivers training you will be issued a Behind-the-Wheel completion certificate (Gold color). Do not lose your certificate you will need
this for your DMV Drive Test.

Drive Test Requirements: If you are under 18 years of age you must:
•
Be at least 16 years of age.
•
Complete six (6) hours of Drivers Training and be issued a Behind-the-Wheel completion certificate.
•
Have held a valid permit for a minimum of six months and one day.
•
Have completed 50 hours of practice with an adult 25 years of age or older. The adult must have a valid California driver license and certify to the 50 hours of practice. At
least 10 of the 50 hours must be done at night.
•
Have a drive test scheduled at the DMV.
•
A licensed driver must accompany you to the drive test.
Day of the in-vehicle Drive Test bring:
1.
Your permit signed by a parent or guardian accepting liability for the minor.
2.
Provide proof of financial responsibility (car insurance for the car used on the drive test) (your name is not required to be on the document for the drive test or drivers training,
unless you are using a car rental.)
3.
Current vehicle registration for car used on drive test.
4.
Your completion of Behind-the-Wheel certificate (gold color) (for minors only) given to you by your Driving Instructor. The in-vehicle Drive Test is about 20 minutes...Good
